Don't Expect Social Security to Pay More

Here’s your Social Security news for March 11th, 2015:

For the third time in seven years Social Security recipients risk a 0% cost-of-living increase for 2016. The reason: inexpensive gasoline, says Dave Hendrix of the San Antonino Express News. The Social Security Administration averages the consumer price index from July, August and September in comparison to previous years. Right now the index for last year stands well below the current reading. Although the summer driving seasons is expected to bring gas prices up it may not be enough to make up for the lower output by refineries here in the US.

The Social Security Administration unveiled a new online form for receiving a replacement SSA 1099 for beneficiaries filing taxes. Every year the administration receives 1.7 million requests for replacement SSA – 1099 forms, out of the over 62 million forms they mail yearly. Alternately retirees filing taxes can request a replacement form via the toll-free number or go to their local Social Security office.

For 23 years after her father's death Lavern Rose cashed more than $282,000 worth of her father's Social Security benefit checks .Rose, 69, pleaded guilty in federal court to Social Security fraud last week in New Orleans. Rose claims that she reported her father's death to the administration and-- that while she knew cashing the checks was wrong-- the benefits continued to come to the house. The Social Security Administration declined to comment on why that would happen.
