Postmodern Incompetence: From Harvard’s Claudine Gay to Secret Service Failures

Whenever confronted with conspiracy, always assume incompetence or complacency before being swept away by the social media mob. A lot of personalities are looking increasingly foolish as more details of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump are revealed. In the rush to harvest engagement, a growing number of allegedly trustworthy sources have burned their credibility to ash — for all time as far as I’m concerned.

As the fog of critical incidents begins to clear, the usual assumptions of bureaucratic incompetence takes shape out of the pandemonium of terror, congressional grandstanding, and the inevitable scapegoating that satisfies the bloodlust of enraged constituents, but does nothing to solve the fundamental problems that gave rise to disaster. It’s a good thing to have former Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle in the rearview mirror, but don’t forget the breakdowns that led to the July 13th disaster in Butler, Pennsylvania didn’t spring fully formed and self-contained from Cheatle’s office.

There are a cadre of executives who’ve implemented policies and enabled the culture responsible for such a massive failure. It’s the same spirit of ineptitude, lack of personal responsibility, and absence of accountability that plagues our institutions of higher learning. And, no wonder. The executives and bureaucrats that staff our federal institutions are products of the same postmodern ideas that allowed Claudine Gay, former Harvard President, to be retained after her resignation as a tenured professor. It seems highly likely that DEI metrics are responsible for Gay’s retention as faculty, despite her flagrantly copious plagiarism.

And just like academe, accountability isn’t a word the Biden administration understands. The only analysis that matters is the degree of loyalty to party. That thesis certainly seems to be supported by the recent DOJ settlement with Peter Strzok for 1.2 million dollars. Strzok’s one time paramour, Lisa Page, received an undisclosed amount from the DOJ. The pay-off is ostensibly for the publication of incriminating text messages Strzok and Page sent to each other while forming a cabal, and planning their strategy to subvert a sitting president.

FBI issued devices come with written disclaimers, noting - among other things - that the user has no expectation of privacy while using such devices. All voice conversations, as well as text messages, are subject to monitoring at any time, and all text messages are preserved on an FBI server. However, if you’ve demonstrated loyalty to the Democrat party, even if your actions are violative of civil liberties, you can rest assured that any adverse consequences will be ameliorated with bags full of cash. I have no doubt that Kim Cheatle will land softly, cushioned by the largess of corporate Democrats.

The New York Post has reported that local law enforcement was aware of the Butler, Pennsylvania shooter’s suspicious behavior up to ninety minutes before the attempted assassination took place. The Post also reported that “a trooper stationed in a command center with the Secret Service agents verbally relayed the suspicious person’s report to the agents, who then requested the warning to be forwarded to a phone number.” With an event of that scale, the utilization of a command post would be expected. Its purpose, in principle part, would be to provide a centralized location in which various law enforcement and venue management personnel could interface with Secret Service personnel on matters of security.

The Post’s reporting that local law enforcement information regarding the presence of a highly suspicious person was not relayed by radio to the detail members assigned to Trump’s immediate personal security is baffling. Even taking into consideration that at any given event, reports of suspicious persons are routine, the response should never be routine. Moreover, the report detailing the use of a phone to relay messages to Trump’s personal detail is far from optimal. Radio communications are the most direct and effective, given the use of earbuds. A piece of protective detail gear so ubiquitous it’s the Hollywood prop most associated with dignitary protection work.

As has been reported and discussed by every media “expert” on dignitary protection, a break down in communications will likely be found to be the proximate cause of the Trump assassination attempt. It’s not rocket science. But, beyond that the greatest threat to the operational capability of our institutions is the refusal to assign culpability to individuals clearly responsible for catastrophic outcomes.

The withdrawal from Afghanistan was a debacle on the scale of the fall of Saigon. Yet, not one military officer with planning or command authority has been held accountable for the tragic loss of life, or the staggering loss of equipment, weapons, and munitions. The Biden administration has made America the laughing stock of the world. And Kamala Harris is poised to double down on the Biden administration’s weaponization of federal institutions, the lack of accountability that nearly resulted in Donald Trump’s death, and DEI policies that erode the integrity and operational capabilities of our most necessary institutions.

Regime change is the only answer to the policies which have delivered some of the most inept bureaucratic mismanagement in recent memory. And, Trump has a proven track record of demolishing entrenched bureaucracies which reward inertia and mediocrity.
