What the Buffalo School System Is Doing Is Downright EVIL

Richard Alan Hannon/The Advocate via AP

Warning: This piece covers some sensitive topics involving violence against children. If this is something you just can't handle, consider yourself warned.

There are problems with public schools. We all know it, and I've beaten that drum at various places over the years. I've been a huge school choice supporter for quite some time because of it.

However, not all public school systems are created equal. That's why some schools are the kind of thing people move into a community for. There are others that need to be burned to the ground and the earth salted afterward.

Some are what I would consider evil.

From what I've learned recently, the schools in Buffalo, New York, are in that latter category.

Over the weekend, Buffalo SVU Detective Rich Hy, known on social media as Angry Cops, was featured on a special episode of the Unsubscribe Podcast. There, he unveiled significant problems with the schools there. In particular, how they're explicitly and actively working to protect people who hurt children, at least that's how I see what he unveiled:

During the podcast, Detective Hy, at times fighting to maintain composure, described several troubling examples of his allegations. One of the examples was a case he directly investigated in his role with the SVU. He also expressed concerns that his whistleblower report could negatively impact his career in law enforcement.

Hy began with an incident at The Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet Elementary School attached to the Buffalo Museum of Science.

“There is a school that's attached to the Buffalo Science Museum. That school that's attached to the Buffalo Science Museum has doors that can go from the Science Museum into the school. Those doors are not locked. Individuals can get into them. Right? Stranger danger, right? And that happened. So, a stranger went into the school. It's a grade school; it's a very low school, and this person grabbed a male and a female child.”

“So, it goes into the school and grabs a young female child and a male child and tries to leave. And I'm gonna I'm gonna parcel this story up in kind of the way that the information came in. At first, the information that came in was that there was one female child that was… uh, it was an attempted abduction. There was no report about the second child. Kind of a big deal. The second child the boy um had pissed himself and when his parents came…”

Hy paused to compose himself before continuing.

“When his parents came to pick him up the school did not disclose to the parents that the kid was a part of an attempted abduction. So, when parents asked him: "Why did my kid piss his pants at school?" The teachers and the people in charge did not tell them that there was an attempted abduction. The school then deleted the video of the attempted abduction.”

“The District Attorney’s Office only got it because somebody within the school had the wherewithal to record it and then give it to them. The district attorney's office has sent subpoenas, so like court order documents from judges that are signed, to the school's legal representatives and those representatives have intentionally not responded to them. Now here's the weird thing which is like this is this is the biggest issue right here… is that specific one, is the one that sent me over the edge… Obviously, I'm emotional from it.

The biggest issue with this entire story… Well, one of the issues with this entire story is that, when subpoenaed, these legal representatives for the Buffalo School Department are ignoring the subpoenas and not just, not… not responding to them but being obstructionists and actually giving information to school administrators and school personnel to not talk to the police or assist the police in any way.”

Another example, also at the above link, involves Hy recounting a child who told a school counselor that she was being beaten by her father. The counselor didn't believe her, apparently claiming the girl had a history of lying – which can be a symptom of child abuse, for the record – and so he ignored it. Then, the child showed the counselor a video of her being beaten on her phone. He then asked her about it later, and the child confirmed that it was her on the video, and it was of her father beating her.

Again, the counselor ignored it.

It wasn't until the third time that the child came into school beaten and swollen that the report finally got made and ended up on Hy's desk.

After the video came out, the Buffalo Public Schools responded on X by saying the allegations were "untruths." Not outright lies, which becomes more difficult to address since a lie involves an intention to deceive, which would also open them up to a defamation suit if and when these allegations are confirmed, but "untruths."

Hy, known for saying what's on his mind to literally anyone who has followed his content over the years, took issue with the claim.

Now, keep in mind that everyone who works with kids is a mandatory reporter. They're required by law to notify someone if there's any reason at all to suspect an assault on a child is happening – of any kind.

They're not empowered to do their own investigations. They lack the authority to decide what should or shouldn't be reported to the police or child protective services.

As bad as public schooling can be, this is something that never should have happened. This isn't partisanship. This isn't something that should run up to any political lines. This is protecting our children. This is something that every adult should be able to agree on.

The odd example could be an outlier, but Hy has brought up at least three examples of situations that should have been reported or reported earlier and they dropped the ball. That's bad.

Over a long enough timeline, that can happen. Buffalo isn't a small town, after all, so with a large enough sample size, it can happen. It should be addressed just the same, but folks could probably accept it in the long run.

However, Hy's comments in the podcast and on X tell us there are a whole lot more cases that he hasn't mentioned, at least not just yet.

Heads.

Should.

Roll.
