VA Gov Race: Oh, There's Harsh Irony In That Horrible Northam Ad, And Democrats Won't Like It

UPDATE: As Guy wrote earlier Latino Victory Fund pulled the ad for a more obvious reason, though this horrific terrorist attack and this tragic murder both undercut the Democratic narrative here.

Even the Washington Post editorial board, which endorsed Northam (shocker!), said the ad was “vile.”

Mr. Northam is correct in his assessment of the poisonous ads and correct that it is “despicable” to imply he would tolerate anyone hurting a child. But just as despicable is an anti-Gillespie ad created by an independent group that supports Mr. Northam. It behooves Mr. Northam, while he is offering criticism, to make clear that even though the anti-Gillespie spot was not a product of his campaign, his campaign wants no part of it.

The Latino Victory Fund ad was vile. Among other faults, it glossed over the fact that Mr. Gillespie condemned the white-supremacist violence in Charlottesville far more directly than did President Trump.

“Ralph Northam would not have run this ad and believes Virginians deserve civility, not escalation,” a spokesman for Mr. Northam emailed us. That was before the Latino Victory Fund announced Tuesday night that it was pulling the ad, issuing a statement that cited “recent events.” Maybe that was a reference to Tuesday night’s truck attack in Manhattan. It is sad that it took such a tragedy for the group to realize how out of bounds its ad was. It’s also sad that someone who promises to be a governor for all Virginians didn’t call them out right away.

We talked about the horrific Latino Victory ad that paints white people as unhinged racist bigots who will plow through Asians, blacks, Hispanics, and Muslims in their pick-up trucks (because all white people have one, or something), which is why you should vote for Ralph Northam on November 7. Northam is the Democratic candidate in Virginia’s gubernatorial race, which while low-key in political coverage is quite significant. It’s a race where Democrats could score their first political win in the post-Trump era. Republican Ed Gillespie could be on the verge of an upset, which is why this ad is trying to scare the hell out of nonwhite voters in Northern Virginia to get them to vote. Even The New York Times admitted that voters in the densely-populated and Democratic heavy Northern Virginia have felt Northam has been a bit low energy in this area, an area that Democrats have to maximize turnout in next week. Yet, there may be some truth to that ad, but Democrats are not going to like it.

Mediaite’s Larry O’Connor pointed this out today in his column, noting that a Muslim girl was indeed chased down and killed…by an illegal alien.

In June, we reported the incident since many jumped on the Islamophobia angle, which quickly died when it was discovered that Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, who murdered Nabra Hassanen, 17, was an illegal immigrant. Torres chased down a group of Muslim teens after an altercation; Hassanen was part of the group. The teens were walking to a nearby McDonald’s near Sterling. Torres drove his car up onto the curb, the kids scattered, and Torres murdered Hassanen with a baseball bat [emphasis mine]:

The Northam campaign and Latino Victory Fund rationalize the despicable attack ad on Gillespie, a moderate Republican, because he has made Northam’s support for sanctuary city laws a central part of his campaign. Gillespie has argued that sanctuary city laws prohibit local law enforcement from fully cooperating with federal immigration officials and the result is that more violent criminals, like MS-13 gang members would be on the streets.

As nationally syndicated radio host Chris Plante observed earlier today on WMAL in Washington, Northern Virginia actually experienced a recent murder involving a young Muslim girl wearing a hijab who was chased down by a suspect in a vehicle. According to police reports the suspect then abducted and murdered the young girl with a baseball bat.

The suspect is an illegal alien.

[…]

Which brings us back to the irony of the Northam campaign and Latino Victory Fund and their rationalization for running the controversial ad against Gillespie. Their argument is that Gillespie is creating a climate of hate and fear by opposing sanctuary city laws and making Northam’s support of suck laws central to his campaign.

The same sort of laws that could shield the Darwin Martinez Torres’s of the world from deportation keeping them on the streets and behind the wheels of their vehicles. So they can chase down little girls wearing a hijab, like Nabra Hassanen.

And Democrats wonder why they’re losing elections.
