Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) released a statement on Michael Avenatti after he was found guilty on all counts of extortion in his legal trial against Nike. The suit alleged Avenatti threatened the the sports giant with a press conference accusing Nike of corruption unless the company paid him and his co-conspirator millions of dollars.

This does not mean Avenatti's legal troubles are over, as he still faces charges in California alleging that he deceived clients, with that trial scheduled to begin in May.

Sasse's statement called Avenatti a "noted scumbag and left-wing-media darling who orchestrated attacks on Justice Brett Kavanaugh," adding, "Michael Avenatti is a D-list attorney but a Grade-A scumbag. It’s hard to get airtime from the slammer, so Nike’s win is cable television’s loss. In the end, Michael Avenatti wasn’t a real attorney, he just played one on TV."

While he was at the height of popularity, Avenatti went after Sasse, calling him a "one man moron who knows nothing about the law or the [Supreme Court of the United States.]

Referring to the tweet, Sasse's statement said, Avenatti "faces up to 42 years in prison for his genius legal theories."

Avenatti became a hero within the "Resistance" when he represented Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against President Trump and presenting a third sexual misconduct accuser against then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh when he was being confirmed by the Senate.

Avenatti took advantage of his newfound fame to make hundreds of cable T.V. appearances and even floated running against Trump in 2020.
