California: Left-Wing City Offers Tips to Residents Hoping to Avoid Home Invasion Spree

AP Photo/Jeff Chiu

We have multiple Democrat-run cities suing automakers for supposedly manufacturing cars that are too easy for criminals to steal – cartoonish and pathetic scapegoating. We have the leading newspaper in our nation's capital city offering local motorists helpful suggestions on how to avoid becoming the latest victim of rampant carjacking, such as using center lanes and avoiding unnecessary nighttime driving (DC violent crimes are up 34 percent over last year's very bad numbers, while auto theft has risen a staggering 117 percent, year-over-year).

And now we have an infamously left-wing city's police force advising residents on how to avoid the predations of emboldened home invaders:

The Oakland Police Department is reporting an uptick in home invasion robberies in some areas, including the Laurel, North Hills, Joaquin Miller, and the San Antonio neighborhoods.  “In recent cases, armed individuals forcibly entered the residences by kicking in doors, threatening the victims, and taking the victim’s personal belongings before fleeing the residence,” OPD wrote. Oakland police officers are still investigating the home invasions, and OPD did not say if any arrests have been made. In response to the crime wave, the Oakland Police Department released tips residents can use to make their homes safer, and reduce the risk of a break-in.

Oakland, California – where Vice President Kamala Harris announced her ill-fated presidential campaign in 2019 – is notoriously soft on crime, including this insane development earlier in the year. Nearby San Francisco is also in the midst of similar lawless decay. These are the tips OPD has published for people who would prefer not to be robbed at gunpoint in their own homes:

  • “Ensure all doors and windows are properly secured. Consider reinforcing doors with a security bar or a door brace.”
  • Install a home security system with motion detection, surveillance cameras, and alarms.
  • “Trim hedges and shrubs around entry points to eliminate potential hiding spots.”
  • “Do not open your door to strangers without verifying their identity.”
  • “Join or initiate a neighborhood watch program in your community.”
  • Use outdoor lighting with motion sensors.
  • “Create an emergency plan to include a safe meeting point."

These aren't necessarily bad pieces of advice, but they amount to an acknowledgment that people need to protect themselves from criminals because the state cannot or will not do the job. Law-abiding citizens have been fed up for quite a while, with tensions spilling over at a recent community meeting (don't be fooled by all the masks, this took place just a few weeks ago, not in 2021):

Meanwhile, across the country in New York City, more of the same

The deranged man caught on camera stalking a group of musicians through Times Square with a knife was granted supervised release by a Manhattan judge on Thursday evening. Prosecutors recommended the release of 22-year-old Deqon Massiah. He was charged with menacing, harassment and criminal possession of a weapon, which are not bail eligible...The suspect was clutching a blade as he snuck up behind the performers at the Crossroads of the World...During his arrest, prosecutors said Massiah told the officers, ”Get the f– off me, they were coming after us.”...Massiah has no criminal history in New York, but is on probation for a sex offender case in Georgia.

This obviously unstable man, with a sexual criminal history, brandished an illegal weapon while stalking people in Times Square, whom he believed were "coming after" him. He was arrested and promptly released without bail because that's how "law enforcement" is mandated in the Empire State. I'm sure the Big Apple's mayor will manage to deflect blame in some form or fashion, however. And since we mentioned DC above, I'll leave you with a round-up of a few items from the area's recent crime blotter:

Nothing may ever top this disgrace, however.
