Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) tweeted Monday morning that he had a portion of his lung removed over the weekend due to the injury sustained when his neighbor attacked him in 2017.

"Unfortunately, I will have to limit my August activities. Part of my lung damaged by the 2017 assault had to be removed by surgery this weekend," he explained. "The doctors, nurses, & staff at Vanderbilt University Medical Center were great. I should be able to return to the Senate in September."

Paul’s injuries resulting from that 2017 attack included multiple broken ribs. He underwent surgery in Canada this year for a hernia connected to the assault.

"You know I’ve had a tough year, I’ve been through a lot of physical problems, I had six ribs broken, three of them displaced rubbing on each other for months, I went through horrendous pain. I had pneumonia twice, I had fluid buildup around my lungs. Now I’ve got other problems I have to deal with. So it’s been a hard year, all because of, you know, the violence of somebody," the senator said during an interview last January.

Senator Paul’s tweet about his lung surgery comes just one day after Paul’s fellow Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell (R) tripped and fractured his shoulder.
