In March 2008—just ahead of the Texas Democratic presidential primary—a political ad popped up on TV screens all across the Lone Star State. It began with the sound of a telephone ringing, and a stern-voiced announcer delivered this ominous message:

It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. (Phone continues to ring)

But there’s a phone in the White House and it’s ringing.

Something’s happening in the world. (Phone continues to ring)

Your vote will decide who answers that call.

Whether it’s someone who already knows the world’s leaders, knows the military…someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world. (Ringing)

It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep.

Who do YOU want answering the phone?

The commercial ends with a photo of Hillary Clinton on the phone, and her voice adds: “I’m Hillary Clinton, and I approved this message.”

Clinton went on to win the popular vote in Texas, but the forces of “hope and change” already had Barack Obama on a glide path to the Democratic nomination for president that year.

That Clinton campaign ad popped into my head as I saw media reports that Joe Biden—seeking to reassure skittish Democrats that he should remain at the top of their ticket after his Hindenberg disaster in his debate with Donald J. Trump—stated that at his age, he needs “more sleep” and pledged if re-elected he will “be in bed by 8 p.m. each night.”

One can almost hear the guffaws at Hamas headquarters and in the Kremlin and at the Ayatollah’s compound in Iran. The “leader of the free world” will be turning in for the night at 8 o’clock, so let’s hold off our plans until 8:01.  China won’t make any moves until 8:01. Terrorists already here in America thanks to Biden’s bungling on our Southern Border will hold off any sinister schemes they might cook up until—you guessed it—8:01 p.m.

This alarming and bizarre pledge by Biden is just his latest hand grenade lobbed at America’s national security.

On the Salem Media Group news program THIS WEEK ON THE HILL, Texas Congressman Keith Self—who serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee—told host Tony Perkins that America’s military has been ill-served by Joe Biden.

“We know that every branch of the service but one has trouble recruiting,” Self declared, adding: “I believe that is because of the wokeness and social experimentation within the military.”  Self contends that rather than creating a fighting force centered on lethal capabilities to be unleashed against America’s enemies, Biden has presided over DEI-type indoctrination including training our troops on the importance of addressing soldiers by their chosen pronouns. And making “transitioning” soldiers more welcome in barracks and on submarines.

“It’s a huge issue as we hear the drumbeat of war,” Self says. “America is not prepared for a major regional conflict, much less one wider than that.” Congressman Self reminded listeners that America’s freedoms are not guaranteed; they must be protected by each generation…and backed by a military force that’s second to none.

His perspective is 100 percent on target, and all the more important now that our titular commander in chief plans to lay his head on a My Pillow at 8 p.m. each night.

But what happens (thanks, Hillary) when that red phone in the White House starts ringing at 3 a.m.?

We’d better do everything we can to educate and warn voters to make the right choice on November 5th…so that Donald Trump is at our end of that phone call.

THIS WEEK ON THE HILL is produced by Salem Media Group, and is heard each weekend on leading radio stations nationwide, as well as on the Salem News Channel starting at 10AM Eastern time on Saturdays.
