The Supreme Court of the United States has issued its long-awaited ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center. This decision sends Roe v. Wade to the ash heaps of history – along with other discredited SCOTUS opinions such as Dred Scott v. Sandford, Plessy v. Ferguson and Korematsu v. United States. This decision does not end abortion, nor does it end the cultural war over the sanctity of life. It does, in the words of Winston Churchill, mark the “end of the beginning” in this cultural conflict.

Justice Samuel Alito said in his opinion: “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely – the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

As expected, the left’s hyperbolic response reveals its radical nature. In the immediate aftermath of the Dobbs decision, the pro-abortion terrorist group Jane’s Revenge launched its “night of rage.” Vandalism and violence occurred against pro-life pregnancy centers in states like Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and others. Such actions followed a reign of terror for more than 40 pro-life centers and organizations over the last several weeks.

Vandalism has included broken windows and spray-painted messages on buildings declaring, “If abortions aren’t safe, neither are you.” Life Choices pregnancy center in Longmont, Colorado, was firebombed following the ruling. Two other pro-life centers in New York and Oregon have been bombed and torched, while reports of vandalism continue to rise.

Such actions indicate that the woke left is violent and hates true democracy.   Rather, it loves its bloody rite of abortion so much it is willing to destroy property and endanger lives if needed. On the contrary, Dobbs is a victory for representative democracy because it restores to the people the power to determine the legal status of abortion through their elected officials.

The opinion further reads: “In some States, voters may believe that the abortion right should be even more extensive than the right that Roe and Casey recognized. Voters in other States may wish to impose tight restrictions based on their belief that abortion destroys an ‘unborn human being.’”

In the decades-long battle for the sanctity of all human life, America is not at the end of this conflict. In many ways, the conflict has now intensified and has entered a new stage, which includes violence from the woke who demand that abortion be not only available but unlimited. This cultural war over the value of human life will continue for the foreseeable future.

In 1942, before the United States entered World War II, Great Britain achieved its first significant victory over fascism in the Battle of Egypt. Before this, the Nazi regime had nearly pounded the British into submission through repeated bombings of London and other advances.

While not historically considered a turning point in the war, the Battle of Egypt was significant because it showed Britain’s resolve to stand up to tyranny.

In response, the great Winston Churchill said:

This is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. It is perhaps the end of the beginning.”

Later on, after America entered into the war, the invasion of Normandy – and the subsequent bloody battle – established a beachhead in Europe and allowed the Allies to march to Berlin. Normandy did not end the war but advanced Allied efforts. The end of the beginning continued until the liberation of Europe was achieved and the world was saved.

Victory for the pro-life movement in Dobbs, like the invasion of Normandy, only establishes a beachhead for those who are committed to ending the slaughter of the unborn. As the Allied forces had to continue after Normandy, the pro-life movement must do the same if it intends to build a culture of life in America. It must win town by town, city by city, county by county and state by state.

To achieve an abortion-free America, we must see a revived culture that supports and welcomes all human life – both born and unborn. Every community must respond to this opportunity. The federal government will not end abortion. Instead, we will see an abortion-free America when a culture of life becomes the norm in all states and localities. Now, because of Dobbs, each community, institution, church and citizen faces a choice and an opportunity to create a society where life flourishes.

This current decision before America is described best by the biblical admonition that says, “Today I set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now, choose life so that you and your descendants may live.”

It is my prayer that all of America will choose life.
