Forget having to promise to support whoever becomes the Republican presidential candidate in order to participate in the GOP debates. America should be focused on what the GOP will do if they take the presidency, the Senate, and the House. Newt Gingrich rode the first Contract with America into a major election victory. It’s time to unify behind a new promise of what a victorious party would do to save America.

In 1992, Ronald Reagan shared what he considered the secret of his success as a presidential candidate. He would say, “I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears, to your confidence, rather than your doubts.” Americans don’t want or need a candidate that majors in attacking his opponents, Republican or Democrat. They want a party that will deliver a future where they’re free to secure their own American Dream. They want a president and a party who will promise and deliver on the priorities they care about. They want renewed hope and optimism for the future.

Here's a focused Contract with America that will unite a majority of Americans and deliver a critical victory in 2024:

Energy Independence: Deliver an all-of-the-above approach to energy. America is blessed with a rich supply of energy resources. Instead of depending upon others to meet our energy needs, we should take advantage of solar, wind energy, nuclear, fusion, natural gas, coal, and oil. Challenge people to develop all of our options and to make them as clean as possible to protect the environment. We should be leading the way for clean energy on all fronts. Stop dictating what we can use, and let suppliers compete for what works. This will keep energy less expensive and help limit the inflation that is forcing too many Americans to live paycheck to paycheck.

A Secure Border: Majority of Americans are fed up with the open border that is inundating our country with people who have not been vetted or screened in any way. We want and need immigrants, but we want legal immigrants who apply to join this amazing country. There should be no easy pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. They should not receive benefits designated for our citizens. It’s time to stop rewarding illegal immigration and get busy inviting the immigrants we need.

School Choice: If you’re rich enough to afford it, citizens have school choice. College students have school choice. Far too many minority students are trapped in poor schools. School choice lets them break that cycle. In Sweden, they have school choice, and most students end up in what previously were public schools. To let them compete, the Swedish government gave public schools the ability to get rid of bad teachers. In America, the teacher unions look out for themselves. It’s time for the funds to follow the child and for the parents to have the choice as to what school will get those funds. If Republicans are the party of school choice giving parents the power they so desire, they will win in 2024.

Law and Order: With DA’s failing to prosecute criminals and some states refusing to even call minor offenses a crime, crime is on the rise. More and more urban merchants are being forced to close their stores. Republicans should rally around the challenge of making America safe again. If you do the crime, it’s time for the guilty to again do the time. Let Democrats pay the price for calls to “defund the police.” Support for law enforcement is a winning issue when citizens are frightened for their safety. If Republicans want to win, they must promise to appoint judges at all levels who are committed to holding criminals accountable.

A Strong Military: The world is more dangerous than ever. China has made it clear that they have no intention of limiting their military ambitions. Russia has flirted with the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Military leaders have confessed that our support of Ukraine has resulted in shortages of military weapons and ammunition. Peace in the world is secure when America remains strong. When it comes to an effective military, Americans want Republicans in control. It’s time to let them know that is still true.

There's one more promise that even Republicans would have a hard time adding to a new Contract with America, but it’s one promise that would make a huge difference in the future of America. Unfortunately, with more than 50% Americans receiving more from government than they pay in taxes, curtailing spending and government entitlements may lose more votes than it gains. When the economy is strong and work participation is high, more Americans may be willing to end their dependence on government largesse. In a healthy and prosperous America, it will be time to add one more promise.

Zero-based Budgeting: Washington politicians have an aversion to fiscal responsibility. What they call a cut is usually just a decrease in the increase in spending. Spending just keeps expanding along with our national debt. Would that Republicans might actually make a commitment to zero-based budgeting where every year, every federal budget item would need to be defended. Automatic spending increases would not be allowed. Some departments, on the basis of their performance, would not receive a dime. All government expenditures would have to be justified on the basis of the results they produce.

It's time to select a Republican candidate ready to promise and deliver what the majority of their voters want. If you can’t support these five promises, you’ll have a hard time earning the votes you need in 2024. It’s time for Republicans to promise and deliver on things that matter most to the future of this great country!
