The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s Fight Is Everyone's Struggle

The world has been dealing for almost half a year with the COVID-19 pandemic that sprouted and spread in large part due to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) mismanagement, secrecy, and cruelty. As Marion Smith, Executive Director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), wrote in USA Today in April, the “blood is on the Chinese Communist Party’s hands. If the coronavirus crisis proves anything, it’s that communism — its logic, its brutality, its incompetence — is still a grave threat to the entire world. The sooner communism is swept into the dustbin of history, the safer we’ll all be.”

Apparently the CCP has not taken the pointing out of these obvious truths lightly, as the past few days it denigrated the VOC in its Global Times mouthpiece as “a far-right organization established by the US government in 1993” (the VOC was established by a unanimous bill passed through Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton) and its China Studies Fellow Adrian Zenz and threatened lawsuits against them and others calling attention to the CCP’s increasingly destructive assault on world peace, security, and freedom. 

Yet if the CCP’s efforts weren’t enough it appears that some in free nations are willing to aid them in their disinformation campaigns. Twitter briefly censored a video by Marion Smith recalling the horrors of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution and the Victims of Communism memorials in Washington, D.C. and Canada’s capital were vandalized in June and just days ago, respectively. 

The ideals of Marxism stand against everything the United States and our way of life stand for. That was a sentiment known and understood over a century ago as well as it was just a few years before the present. The message that the vandals on Canada’s VOC memorial sprayed - “Communism will win” - reminds us that the defense of human liberty is never over but is an eternal fight that, in the worlds of Ronald Reagan, “must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

Communism has killed well over a hundred million people throughout its short history everywhere from the Soviet Union to Southeast Asia, from the Middle East to Africa, from South America to Europe, whether in the form of tyrannical governments or terrorist guerilla movements. It has led to the suffering of billions who’ve seen their faiths silenced, their families hurt, their dreams diminished, their conditions of life degrade, and their voices silenced. 

As National Security Advisor Robert C. O’Brien said in late June, the United States “has finally awoken to the threat the Chinese Communist Party’s actions and the threat they pose to our very way of life.” Everything including the CCP’s treatment of its Uyghur population, its new national security law essentially taking over Hong Kong, its predatory lending to Third World nations, and its ongoing disinformation campaigns all show that the CCP is now no idle threat to the United States and the cause of liberty. 

While there are those who each day work to defend our nation and promote human freedom in the agencies of policy nonetheless there are still many ordinary Americans who can do as well. Standing with the values that make America the greatest nation in the world is perhaps the strongest support, as it is that moral righteousness that gives our country its deepest strength - its people - and inspires countless others across the world to too stand for what’s right.

The VOC and Marion Smith are doing noble work in difficult times. It is easy to forget the dead, the underserved, those banished to unknown prisons, and those without a voice. It is difficult facing a government, that of the CCP, with unlimited resources of every kind, that has no restraint, and sees no level of cruelty to which they are not willing to sink. 

Yet America is a strong nation and, as always throughout our history, when challenges to freedom arise the boldness of our country to face those head-on has never faded and I have no doubt it ever will.
