The Democratic Party has moved so far to the left that some of its stalwarts are very publicly jumping ship.

What happened to the Democratic Party? How has it become so transmogrified that some of its most famous members are leaving and openly supporting Donald Trump?

*There is no more Democratic name than “Kennedy”, but Bobby Jr. has dropped out of the race for the presidency and endorsed Donald Trump. Sure, the rest of the clan has disowned him but the son of the slain former Attorney General tried to run in a primary against Joe Biden. The Democrats refused to give him Secret Service protection and made the primary conditions so onerous that his first step towards Trump was to become an independent and leave the party of his fathers. It took a few months more but he eventually joined Trump to help change the country for the better.

*Tulsi Gabbard was once a co-chair of the Democratic National Committee. From Hawaii, she is a former Army officer. She is smart, well-spoken, and hard-working. She has gone from seeking the 2020 nod for Democratic nominee for president to a partner in Donald Trump’s third run for office. The administration awarded her for her leaving them by forcing her through enhanced security procedures for travel.

*Alan Dershowitz was your classic Democrat: A Jewish lawyer/Harvard professor who is quite eloquent and thoughtful. He supported Hillary Clinton though he would not refrain from defending Trump from baseless legal attacks. After the most recent Democratic National Convention, he announced that the party’s support for its Hamas wing was too much for him and that he was through with the party that he had been closely associated with for decades.

While these three former Democrats might be the best known, there are others, such as state officials who have changed their party affiliation out of disgust with the party’s policies. What are the official policies of the present Democratic Party? Below are some of the accepted positions, ignoring Kamala Harris’ recent flip-flops:

*A completely open border. Even the supposed compromise bill scotched by Republicans allowed for 5,000 illegal aliens to enter each day.

*The once-derided “Green New Deal” is the centerpiece of the party. In their world, all cars are electric, all electricity is produced by wind and solar, and you may or may not still have an air conditioner and forget about that gas stove you love.

*Trans uber allies. You will say the pronouns that you are told to say. You will gladly give the women’s trophy to the guy with the beard named Karen. You will agree and say with a happy heart that men and women, boys and girls can change sex at the drop of a hat.

*Abortion has gone from “safe, legal and rare” to on demand right up until birth. There are no limits to their abortion program.

There is no question that Democratic ghosts of old such as John Kennedy and Tip O’Neill would not recognize their party. Their views were far closer to those of Trump and the Republicans on taxes and foreign policy. How did the Democrats move so far to the left so fast? The answer is that there is no braking force left in the party to slow them down or stop them until they reach the most extreme position of their ascendant left wing.

When I was in Madison doing my doctoral research, I started to keep kosher. And while I did not sign any official document or make any proclamation, my decision meant that 99.99 percent of all restaurants in the world would become off-limits by my own choice. When my wife and I went on a guided tour in Hawaii, we were all but fainting when we saw the food that the other participants were eating. In vain, we were turning cans and food packages around and around looking for those little letters that mean that the food was kosher. The driver felt so bad for us as we had eaten nothing all day that he stopped at a little roadside hut where my wife bought a fresh coconut with a straw. Religion or moral imperatives act as brakes (as well as sources of impetus) in our lives. When a person or group has no guiding principle that can say, “No!” then there is no stopping before the end of the line. Abortion went from rare and only early in the pregnancy to very often and at any time. Green energy went from being one more option for energy production where relevant to being foisted on people who will have fewer choices of less successful cars and appliances. Waiting half an hour to fill your car with electricity is not the same as in-and-out of a gas station in five minutes.

This disastrous state of affairs is a huge opening for Republicans. For every high-profile Democrat who leaves the party, there are no doubt thousands or more thinking like him or her. Republicans need to stress a platform that appeals to anyone who is not a green-haired college lunatic, cat lady, or communist at heart. To wit:

*The GOP supports a completely closed border. With it, those who are in the US illegally will be deported and future legal immigration will be for the benefit of the US.

*The GOP supports economic policies that make fuel and food affordable for all Americans. The party will support energy policies that will leave the US strong and independent.

*The GOP supports strong policing. Honest Americans deserve to live in peace and without fear of criminals or drugs.

*The GOP will support women and their right to compete as women and only with women in all sporting events.

*The GOP will support free speech online and elsewhere.

*The GOP will support its allies and field a military that will be the fear of all of the country’s enemies.

The GOP has become not only the working class party but also the party of normal people. Make it clear that if people want a better future for themselves, their children and for their country, then they need to vote Republican.
